WHAT’S HAPPENING?
Here is some of the current news from the Congo Project:
- Six portable sawmills have been repaired for Congolese owners who use them to lay smooth roadbeds on the log frames of new bridges. The owners repay the costs of the repairs out of the income they earn, creating a revolving fund for investing in more sawmills.
- One of the brick presses funded by PCP recently made the bricks for a new building at a clinic in Bokonzo.
- The four hospitals operated by the CEUM have received new equipment through PCP donations. The new items include fetal dopplers, ultrasound machines, microscopes, centrifuges, linens, wheel chairs, steam sterilizers, EKG machines, and more.
- Over $100,000 worth of work has been done to upgrade the water and electric infrastructure for the CEUM hospitals.
- A team from Peninsula Covenant Church in Redwood City, Calif., traveled to Congo to train CEUM staff members on the computers that the church had refurbished and donated.
- School buildings are being restored, some with long-lasting, fire-protective metal roofs.
- Another truck will soon be on its way. Bob Thornbloom (director of Congo Technical Services) is overseeing its packing into a cargo container with the help of volunteers in Rockford, Ill.
- Young girls in Congo are taking their exams and advancing in school with the help of PCP and Women Ministries of the ECC, which is raising funds to Educate the Girls.
- A volunteer medical team is on its way to Congo as of the beginning of February. The team, led by PCP Medical Director Roger Thorpe, includes Kathy Holmgren, wife of Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren, and their daughter Calla, Calla is an obstetrician and Kathy is a nurse. They will be in Karawa when the Super Bowl is played.
