Lillie Makes It to CHIC – Finally!
KNOXVILLE, TN (July 24) - Lillie Harrison attended her first CHIC event. She is 86 years old.
"They didn't have CHIC when I was a teenager," she says, adding she
never thought of attending any others. Then three weeks ago she felt
called to be a member of the CHIC Prayer Team. "The Lord just said 'Go.' "
"I think we should always be serving the Lord," says Harrison, who lives at Covenant Village of Golden Valley in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Harrison says she always has had a heart for teenagers as well as prayer. For four and a half years in the 1950s, she worked with a group of teenagers who initiated a prayer meeting that lasted late into the night every Thursday evening, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. "I said we are going to pray aloud so I know you're awake," she recalls.
"I very much have a heart for teenagers because they are the future leaders of our church; they are the future leaders of our country," Harrison says.
Harrison stands a little over four feet, but teenagers sought her out for prayer during Tuesday night's worship as they sought healing for inner pain. She represents the image of a loving grandmother to many of the students, says Martha Swanson, coordinator of the Prayer Team.
Harrison was determined to stay in the late-night worship service despite the sound volume of some of the bands. "I have hearing aids - and I take them out," she says.
