Counting the Gifts is Big Task

KNOXVILLE, TN (July 18) - Crammed into a small room, more than two dozen people spent Tuesday morning counting and bundling the offering brought by CHIC students (accompanying photo) for Covenant World Relief.

Offering Tables were covered with $1, $5, $10, $20, and $50 bills, testifying to the generosity of attendees. Denominations of currency representing offerings from Latin America, Canada and Europe also were counted.

One donor emphasized their love for the people to whom the donations eventually would help. The donor had formed an "origami dollar" in the shape of a heart with a flower on top.

The final tally will be announced at Thursday night's worship service at the Thompson-Boling Arena on the University of Tennessee campus where CHIC 2006 is under way.

Counting the money generated at CHIC, including sales of T-shirts and other memorabilia, is a daunting task. All sales must be accounted for each day. Two of the people responsible for the counting said they had been up well after 1 a.m. Tuesday morning counting Monday's receipts.
