Japanese Study Care Standards in Covenant Facility

MERCER ISLAND, WA (July 11) - Responsible for developing guidelines to prevent bed sores in community care and long-term care facilities in Japan, four Japanese researches traveled to Mercer Island to study practices and procedures at Covenant Shores, a continuing care retirement community on Mercer Island, Washington.

Covenant Shores Director of Nursing Darin Meyer hosted the visitors. He reviewed typical U.S. standards of care, shared specific Covenant Shores procedures and led the guests on a tour of the skilled nursing center at Covenant Shores.

The visit reflects the high regard others have for the community, says Anne Arakaki-Lock, Covenant Shores campus administrator, who noted the Japanese were not the first visitors from Asia on an educational trip. "We have hosted similar Chinese delegations and always find the visits extremely interesting. The mutual learning and sharing is invaluable."

Midori Nagano, associate professor at Chiba University, received funds from the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare to develop the guidelines. Other visiting researchers included delegation leader Megumi Teshima, nursing management professor, Chiba University; Chihoko Sakurai, research associate, Chiba University; and Mikie Kofuji, director of nursing, Kanazawa University Hospital.

Covenant Shores is a nationally accredited not-for-profit continuing care retirement community administered by Covenant Retirement Communities on behalf of the Board of Benevolence of the Evangelical Covenant Church.
