The Evangelical Covenant Church has committed to raising $1 million over
the next five years to partner with the Covenant Church of Taiwan on
projects throughout China in areas of education, training for pastors,
and church development.
"As the Evangelical Covenant Church responds to this opportunity, we
know that lives will be impacted through the people and financial
resources that support this vital mission effort," says Curt Peterson,
executive minister of Covenant World Mission.
"Since launching The Great Open Door campaign in February, churches have
responded with interest and special giving," Peterson says. The goal is
to raise $200,000 each year from individuals and local churches. "This
challenge donation is an added incentive for all of us to give
sacrificially," Peterson notes.
China was the Covenant's first mission field, beginning in 1890 with
Peter Matson and 95 missionaries who served there for 58 years. In
January 1948, bandits murdered Covenant missionaries Alik Berg, Esther
Nordlund, and Martha Anderson. By December, all missionaries had left.
"We are returning to our roots," says Donn Engebretson, the Covenant's
executive vice president.
To contribute to the campaign, send checks designated for The Great Open
Door initiative to the Evangelical Covenant Church, 5101 N. Francisco
Ave., Chicago, IL, 60625. Donations also can be made online at The Great
Open Door.
The denomination has produced a number of resources to help local
Covenant churches develop their own China initiative emphases, as well
as a link for interested individuals to donate online using a major
credit card. Also available are links to news stories about the China
project and various resources in PDF format. A China video on DVD also
is available, along with copies of brochures and posters, by calling the
Covenant Resource Center at 800-338-4332. Additional information on the
China project also is available by calling 773-907-3316 and visiting
this Covenant website at www.covchurch.org.
