Covenanter Featured in Sports Illustrated
MADISON, WI (March 8) - Covenanter Peter Brown is a person to keep your eye on-at least according to the editors of Sports Illustrated, which has featured the swimmer in its "Faces in the Crowd" section of the current issue.
The Grinnell College senior grew up at Arbor Covenant Church in Madison.
He is the first alternate to the NCAA Division III National Men's
Swimming and Diving Championships scheduled for March 16-18.
"We'll find out (next) Tuesday," says his mother, Kris, who adds he missed the championships by .03 seconds.
A proud mother, she says she is excited about her son's national recognition. "It's kind of fun to go to a grocery a store and buy a magazine that has your son in it," she says.
This is not the first time Brown has been recognized nationally. Last summer, Fox Sports Net-the regional networks of Fox Sports-featured him in one of its "NCAA on Campus" programs. The computer science major was an intern with the USA Swimming National Team Division at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He helped with research and technical programs to help improve swimmers' performances.
He was this year's Midwest Conference champion in the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard freestyle. Under his leadership, the Pioneers won their fifth consecutive conference team title.
His college swimming accomplishments include:
- four-time Midwest Conference champion in the 100-meter freestyle
- a member of 16 conference champion relay teams
- set school records in the 50 freestyle (21.25) and the 200 freestyle (1:42.70)
- elected as the 2005 National Swim Coaches of America Academic All-American-Honorable Mention
