Awards Honor Humanitarian Care at SCH

CHICAGO, IL (October 25, 2005) - Swedish Covenant Hospital earned three national awards earlier this month in recognition of its humanitarian care. The hospital is operated by Ministries of Benevolence of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

The awards were presented during the Planetree National Convention in Chantilly, Virginia. Planetree is a non-profit membership organization working with hospitals and health centers to support the development and implementation of patient-centered, holistic care in healing environments.

Employee Gillian Cappiello received the Spirit of Caring Caregiver Award while the hospital was cited for development of its international menu and its language-related accent reduction program. The latter initiative helps English-speaking people of differing nationalities to better understand Americans.

This is the first year that the hospital has been an affiliate of Planetree, which was started in 1978 by a patient in response to impersonal care she received at a high-tech hospital.
