Key Largo (FL) Residents Forced to Flee Hurricane's Path

KEY LARGO, FL (October 20, 2005) - Members of Key Largo Community Covenant Church have been ordered to leave their homes because of the threat from Hurricane Wilma, says Kurt Miericke, superintendent of the Southeast Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church..

No other areas in which Covenant churches are located have been evacuated, he said, but added the situation could change by the day, depending on the path of Wilma. Weather forecasters now predict the record-setting hurricane will strike the southern tip of Florida sometime Sunday afternoon or evening, according to news reports.

During Katrina, Covenant Village of Florida had to evacuate its most severely ill residents due to power outages. While preparations are in place, early indications are that the hurricane will not directly strike Broward, where the Covenant retirement community is located, says Stephanie Petrasky, the institution's disaster response coordinator.
