Youth Supply Lunches for Underprivileged Kids

GALESBURG, IL (August 2, 2005) - Members of the junior high group at the Covenant Church helped keep costs down at a county camp for underprivileged children by supplying 420 lunches last week.

The nine students prepared and delivered 105 bag lunches each of the four days the program operated, says Mary Ann Gieryna, who with her husband, Alan, leads the junior high group. The students had some adult help, but they did the bulk of the work. Members of the church donated the money to pay for the lunches, Gieryna says.

Churches from around the community each take a week throughout the summer to provide the lunches, Gieryna says. The Covenant Church has provided lunches for 11 years. Adults had led the program in the past, and this was the first time the junior high was involved.

"We thought it would be a good mission activity they could do here in the local area," Gieyrna says. Last Christmas, the youth group also rang bells for the Salvation Army.
