Young Man Seriously Injured in Stabbing Assault
CHICAGO, IL (July 25, 2005) - Jason Burley, son of Rev. Jerome and Joanne Nelson, is reported in stable but critical condition after being stabbed numerous times in the chest and abdomen Saturday night behind his parents' apartment.Nelson is superintendent of the Central Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church. Burley's mother, Joanne, works in the Department of Church Growth and Evangelism.
The 35-year-old Burley was severely injured in the attack that occurred shortly after 10 p.m. He remains hospitalized at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
Amir Kando, 34, has been arrested in connection with aggravated battery with a weapon, according to a spokesperson with the Chicago Police Department. Kando reportedly lives downstairs in the same building in which the Nelsons reside. No motive for the attack has been made public.
Bond for Kando was set at $275,000 during a hearing this afternoon. He will appear in court July 29 at which time a preliminary hearing date will be set and charges officially filed, according to a spokesperson for the State Attorney's office. Kando was charged with battery twice in 1998, according to Cook County Circuit Court records. Disposition of those cases was not immediately available.
