New York Athletes Headed for Babe Ruth Series

JAMESTOWN, NY (July 20, 2005) - Asa Johnson and Brandon Bergfalk, who are members of the confirmation class at Zion Covenant Church in Jamestown, helped make local baseball history over the weekend when their team became the first ever in their area to advance to the 13-year-old Babe Ruth World Series.

The two and their teammates will compete against teams from across the country in the tournament, which is scheduled to be played in Jamestown August 20-27.

Johnson and Bergfalk advanced to the series when their team, the East Lake Chautauqua All-Stars, defeated Monroe County of Rochester, New York, to capture the Western New York Championship. Johnson was the starting pitcher in two of the team's three wins, including the title game. Bergfalk plays third base.

The teams were tied at 3-3 when East Lake scored four runs in the seventh inning with two outs. One of those runs came from an RBI double by Johnson, who went on to close out the game for the win.
