Fairmont Church Breaks Ground for Building Expansion
FAIRMONT, MN (July 11, 2005) - People who attend the Evangelical Covenant
Church in Fairmont only at Christmas may need a building map when
construction is completed on a $1 million expansion that includes a new
sanctuary and classrooms.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Sunday following morning services.
The ceremony was another step for a project that the church's
construction committee began developing five years ago. Work is slated
to begin in August and completed in time for the Christmas service.
The upper level of the two-story, 4,000-square-foot expansion will
include a sanctuary with seating for 320 people, says Pastor Dan
Fullerton. The church currently averages 160 in attendance. The
expansion also will include six new Sunday school classrooms.
The current sanctuary will be converted to a fellowship hall with a new
kitchen. The current fellowship hall, located in the basement, will be
converted to a youth center. In the past, youth ministry has had to be
done offsite, including having Sunday school in a room at the nursing
home across the street, says Fullerton
The expansion will connect to the current building and will have a
similar look on the exterior.
The church has raised $220,000 so far to fund the project and has a
monthly commitment of $6,000 from members to finance a loan. The current
building was built in 1981 and 1982.
