African Children's Choir to Perform Friday
NAUGATUCK, CT (June 15, 2005) - The African Children's Choir will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at Hillside Covenant Church. A freewill offering will be taken.
The choir is comprised of 26 children ages 7-12 from six countries on
the African continent - Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana and South
Africa. Many of the children have lost one or both parents through the
devastation of war, famine and disease. The children sing a wide variety
of songs accompanied by drums and ethnic instrumentation.
Six members of the group performed backing vocals with singer Wyclef Jean on the "Late, Late Show," the "Tonight Show," and the "Ellen Degeneres Show." They performed "A Million Voices," which was featured in the movie Hotel Rwanda.
Hillside is a church of about 80 attenders, and Richard Cudmore, who co-pastors with his wife, Eva, says he is excited that a group that has been so prominently featured will perform at the church. "This is kind of a new thing for us," says Cudmore. "We're trying to find avenues to extend ourselves. We decided to do this as an event that we can put on with the community, and hopefully to build bridges with people in the community."
