Seeberger Leads Team to Historic Finish
SANTA CRUZ, CA (May 26, 2005) - Covenanter Matt Seeberger led his University
of California Santa Cruz team to a historic sweep of the NCAA Division
III men's tennis national championships on Monday.
The sophomore captured his second consecutive singles title and the
doubles title, while leading the Slugs to a team title. It was the first
time a college team had won all three. Seeberger is the first player to
ever capture the singles, doubles and team title in the same season. He
also was only the second player to ever earn consecutive singles titles.
The feat first was accomplished in the 1991-1992 season.
Seeberger, who is from Redwood City, California, and attended Peninsula
Covenant Church, has been called a tennis "phenom." Sports
Illustrated featured him as one of the "Faces to Watch" in 2004.
Seeberger and his doubles partner, senior Matt Brunner, had to defeat
Redland, a team that they lost to three times during the season. They
took the first set in a tie-breaker and then blanked Redland 6-0 to advance.
The doubles final against Kalamazoo was a nail-biter. Each team had
split a set before the Slugs won the match in a tie breaker. They let
seven match points escape them before capturing the title.
