Covenanter Handlogten Has Signed with the Utah Jazz
SALT LAKE CITY, UT (April 13, 2005) - Ben Handlogten, who is an active member at Trinity Covenant Church in Lexington, MA, recently signed a contract with the Utah Jazz of the NBA for the remainder of the season. The 6-foot-10 inch Handlogten had previously signed a series of 10-day contracts with the Jazz. He has averaged 5.1 points per game and 3.3 rebounds since returning to the Jazz this year. He previously played for the Detroit Pistons before playing in Japan, Turkey, Italy and Greece. While playing in Greece, he ranked ninth in scoring, averaging 16.8 points per game.
Last year, Handlogten played 17 games for the Jazz before tearing ligaments in his left knee. At that point, it appeared that he might not play again, so his comeback has been a surprise for many.
Despite facing the possible end of his career, "he stayed remarkably upbeat and diligent as he rehabbed and got back into shape," said his pastor, Doug Cederberg. "We were so delighted when the Jazz brought him back after the All-Star break this year. Through it all, he remains humble toward others and attentive to his God. He is an inspiration to anyone who is tempted to give up."
Handlogten serves as an inspiration other ways. He and his wife, Dani, have taken a lead role in the church's upcoming mission trip to Reynosa, Mexico in late June and are connected with the church's youth group. "He is a kind and humorous person who loves Jesus and lives a life of true discipleship," said Cederberg.
