Service Set April 2 for Douglas M. Lewis

TWISP, WA (March 30, 2005) - A service will be held Saturday, April 2, for 84-year-old retired Evangelical Covenant Church pastor Douglas M. Lewis who died March 26. The service will begin at 1 p.m. at Methow Valley Community Covenant Church with pastor Gregg Oliver officiating.

Lewis was born on November 11, 1920, the ninth of 12 children. He graduated from high school in Granite Falls, Washington. Lewis married his high-school sweetheart, Helen Blythe, on his 23rd birthday and the couple had three daughters.

Lewis served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, subsequently working as a journeyman machinist in Bremerton Naval Shipyard. After he felt called into the ministry, Lewis attended Seattle Pacific University where he graduated in 1953 with a B.A. in sociology and religion. He also studied theology for three years at Fuller Theological Seminary. Lewis was ordained in 1962 by the Evangelical Covenant Church and in 1965 completed theological studies at North Park Theological Seminary.

He served as pastor at Hilman Covenant Church in Seattle, Washington; Evangelical Covenant Church in Whitehall, Michigan; College Center Covenant Church in San Diego, California; Trinity Covenant in Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Martha Lake Covenant Church in Lynnwood, Washington.

He also served as a student pastor at Poulsbo Covenant Church in Poulsbo, Washington; La Crescenta Covenant Church in La Crescenta, California; and was an interim pastor at Covina Covenant in Covina, California.After retiring, the couple moved to the Methow Valley in North Central Washington to be near family. He founded Community Covenant Church in Twisp and attended there until his death. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Bob; two sisters, Hazel of Oregon, and Ruth of Alaska; three daughters, Janie (Gene) Westlund of Twisp, Nancy Elizabeth (David) Wong of San Diego, and Jacklyn (Doug) Williford of San Diego; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
