Revival to Highlight One-Year Anniversary

LANSING, IL (March 30, 2005) - New Beginning Covenant Church is celebrating its one-year anniversary with a revival April 13-17. Special speakers are scheduled for each evening service, all of which begin at 7 p.m. The church also has scheduled its first celebration of "Historical Black Colleges and Universities" (HBCU) for April 10.

The church is focused on living out its name, says pastor Kevin Davenport. "Our sole purpose is to offer all kinds of individuals everywhere a new life in Christ," he says, adding that he wants people to know that they are not defined by their mistakes of the past.

Davenport says the church, which averages 75 in attendance, has seen a number of people find new life in Christ. These have included people who felt they would be forever stuck where they were in their lives, advance to good jobs and have their marriages restored. People who have had their lives restored have been key to inviting others needing life changes, he says.

There are special challenges to a church that is reaching people who have suffered lives of struggle. "Any time you try to reach wounded people, all the life they know is a life of hurt," he says. "Opening them to a world of possibilities is an ongoing process."

Part of that process is the scheduled revival. "When Broken Pieces Come Together" will begin with pastor George Wilson of Friends 4 Life Covenant Church in Flossmoor, Illinois, speaking April 13. Pastor Harvey Carey of Citadel of Faith Covenant Church in Detroit, Michigan, will speak April 14. Pastor Darrell Griffin of Oakdale Covenant Church in Chicago will speak on April 15. No service is planned for April 16, but pastor Marcus Causby of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, will speak at 9:30 a.m. on April 17.

The HBCU event will be held at 9:30 a.m. April 10. Twenty-three universities and colleges have been invited to attend the special worship service. The church will award a $500 scholarship to the school that brings the most alumni and supporters.

"We have had a strong commitment to education from the beginning," says Davenport. "If you don't have a quality education, if you don't prepare yourself academically you are going to have a tougher time in life." The church has distributed $3,000 in scholarships since its inception. The scholarships are funded from the regular tithes and offerings.

New Beginning meets in the Seton Academy Auditorium at 16100 Seton Road in South Holland, Illinois. To speak with one of the staff, call 708-331-9332. Additional information on the church and its ministries will also be found by visiting the church website at New Beginning.
