Covenanter New President of MS Society

NEW YORK, NY (March 18, 2005) - North Park University alumnus Joyce Nelson has assumed her position as the new president and chief executive officer of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She was elected to the position in December.

Nelson graduated from North Park in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in English and secondary education. She was president of the student body her last year. Nelson is the daughter of Rev. Wesley and Margaret Nelson. Wesley Nelson served on the seminary faculty from 1960-1975 and was a Covenant minister for nearly 70 years prior to his death in January 2003. "I am honored to be selected to lead the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and by the board's vote of confidence in entrusting me with this awe-inspiring responsibility," Nelson said in a press release.

Nelson began her 21-year career with the society as development manager with the Northern California chapter. She served in various capacities and for the last five years has been the vice president of field operations. In that role, she has provided oversight for all of the organization's fundraising efforts and its relations with chapters.

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, chronic and often disabling disease of the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord.
