Johnsons Recovering from Accident Injuries

CHICAGO, IL (March 10, 2005) - Retired missionary to Colombia Marlys Johnson was scheduled to undergo surgery last evening at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove to help repair her fractured left tibia and shoulder that she suffered in a nine-vehicle pileup last week south of Chicago. She is expected to be transferred to Marian Joy Rehab Center in Wheaton no earlier than Saturday, says her husband, Richard, who also was a missionary in Colombia.

The couple was injured in the accident on Interstate-55 south of Chicago last Thursday. The accident shut down traffic in both directions along a five-mile stretch of the highway. Nine people were injured. Marlys sustained a concussion, broken ribs and sternum. Richard suffered a concussion, numerous fractures in the pelvic area, ribs and sternum. Surgery is not scheduled for him, but he was scheduled to be transferred to Marian Joy today.

Richard says the couple is thankful to God for their protection as well as all the care, concern and prayers they have been receiving. The Johnsons spent their entire 26-year service as Covenant missionaries in Colombia, beginning in 1976. They retired in 2002 and have been living in Wilmington, Illinois.
