'Sleep Out' More than Idealism
CHICAGO, IL (February 25, 2005) - More than idealism led many students to participate in a "sleep out" last weekend to call attention to the plight of the homeless and those living below the poverty line."We were helping our friends," says Tim King, a North Park University junior, who leads a homeless ministry at the campus. For several years, he and others from the ministry have been bringing meals to the people living along Lower Wacker Drive beneath the city's famous and upscale Miracle Mile. They spend time playing games and talking, as well.
King, who organized the coalition of 300 students from around the Midwest who participated in the sleep out, also has spent nights sleeping among the homeless. He uses the word "friend" in a real sense of the word.
"I'm doing this for Jacob," he says in reference to one of his new friends. "He's a great guy. I'm also doing this for Michael. It makes a big difference when you're that invested. All human relationships are give and take - they have a lot of advice to offer," he adds, noting that he has benefited from that advice in a number of ways.
