Swedish Covenant Hospital Given National Recognition

CHICAGO, IL (February 15, 2005) - Swedish Covenant Hospital (SCH) is one of only two hospitals in Illinois to be named a Hospital of Choice for 2005 by the American Alliance of Healthcare Providers, an award that also recognized several of the nation's top hospitals.

The award focuses heavily on quality of care, patient and physician services and satisfaction and community access. Of the approximately 235 Illinois hospitals, only Silver Cross in Joliet shares the honor with Swedish Covenant this year. Past honorees include the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and the University of Chicago Hospitals.

"I am particularly pleased that Swedish Covenant Hospital is one of only two in Illinois so designated," says Mark Newton, SCH president. "It puts Swedish Covenant Hospital in a select group of hospitals nationally, reflecting our continued dedication to compassion in health care. I am especially proud of our staff who worked very hard and deserve recognition."

Alliance President R. Vincent Parr said honorees were rated based on 10-point criteria in areas of professional ethics, standards of conduct, patients' rights, performance management, staff development and communication systems. Hospitals also must have demonstrated a dedication to their community.

Among the other nationally recognized hospitals are three in California - Stanford Hospital and Clinics, UCLA Medical Center and the University of California-San Francisco Medical Center – as well as Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland; Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston; the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor; Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri; the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha; New York Presbyterian Hospital; Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina; the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio; and the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.
