Viking Men Drop Close Contest to Millikin
By Craig PinleyDECATUR, IL (January 25, 2005) - Despite 16 points by Lamar Townsend, the North Park University (NPU) men's basketball team lost 81-73 at Millikin University Sunday in a game that was rescheduled due to bad weather a day earlier.
Townsend hit 5 of 9 field goal tries for the Vikings, now 4-11, 0-4 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play. Coach Paul Brenegan's team plays a 7:30 p.m. Wednesday conference game at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Other bright spots for NPU included the 14 points by Brett Mathisen and reserve Mike Peterson and the nine rebounds by Mike Haehn. Millikin, 9-6 overall, 1-3 in the CCIW, was led by Chuck Williams, who tallied 19 points by Chuck Williams.
In other Vikings athletic news last weekend:
- Lucia Abel won the long jump, finished second in the 200 meter dash and was fourth in the 55 meter race as the NPU women's track and field team finished fourth at the Private Colleges Invitational Saturday at Carthage. Liz Podczaski was third in the long jump, sixth in the 400 while Allison Weller was second in the mile and fourth in the 800 for the Vikings. The men's program, which finished fifth as a team, received a third place finish from Chris Wada in the 55 meter dash. NPU's Joel Ylagan (200) and Marcus Simmons (400) were fifth in their respective events.
- In women's basketball, Megan Slattery scored 13 points and had nine
rebounds in NPU's 76-40 CCIW loss at Wheaton College on Saturday. Laura
Mount added nine
points and six rebounds for the Vikings (9-7, 2-4), which play a
conference home game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (tonight) against North
Central College.
