Hudson and an ecumenical team from Spokane seek to encourage the Anuak,
who fled Ethiopia for the camps after government troops slaughtered more
than 400 educated men and boys on December 13, 2003.
Covenant World Relief (CWR) has worked in the Anuak communities since
1997 to improve the quality of life through improving the regional
hospital and being a major participant in the Baro River Bible School,
according to Jim Sundholm, CWR director. The Covenant has aided many
tribes throughout the region, he added.
"We are going to let the Anuak know that 'we are praying for you; we are
working for you,'" said Hudson. "There is hope." Hope has been in short
supply for the Anuak from Ethiopia because the limited amount of food
resources have not been reaching them, Hudson says. "We want them to
know that people around the world notice and are working on their behalf."
Hudson became involved with the effort after learning of the Anuak
through a church council member who employed an Anuak immigrant. Spokane
is one of the few Anuak communities in the United States, Hudson said.
No date has been set for the trip because final details need to be
arranged, but Hudson said, "I'm sure I'll be leaving in the next couple
of days."
