Heavy Rain Floods Alpine Camp Offices
BLUE JAY, CA (January 11, 2005) - More than 35 inches of rain that poured in southern California over the last week have flooded the program offices at Alpine Camp and Conference Center and strewn debris around the facility, according to Stan White, executive director.Relief is expected Wednesday as the skies are expected to clear and turn sunny through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. State and local authorities are monitoring road conditions, but have declared them to be safe for travel to the camp, White said.
"We have several springs of water I never even knew existed," said
White, who has been the camp's director for the past 10 years.
Elsewhere, pastors of area churches affected by the storm reported only
minor damage to member's property and no injuries.
The camp, which is operated by the Pacific Southwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church, is located in the mountains, about 100 miles from San Diego. The camp still plans to host its winter camp for fourth through sixth graders scheduled for this weekend, says White. The forecast through the weekend is for clearing and sunny skies, according to the National Weather Service.
The rains have left several inches of water in the program offices, White said. Long after the rains have left, the camp still will be dealing with its effects. "There's just a lot of debris coming down," White said. The grounds have suffered a lot of erosion, especially where the camp had to cut down a large number of trees due to a bark beetle infestation. The damage at Alpine fortunately was not as severe as rain that created deadly mudslides, including one near La Conchita that has claimed four lives with as many as 27 individuals still reported missing.
