Je'Shawn Stevenson scored 17 points and dished out eight assists to lead
the Vikings, which move to 4-7 overall. NPU's men travel to Rock Island,
Illinois, for a 7:30 p.m. College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin
(CCIW) at Augustana College next Wednesday.
Brett Mathisen was Thursday's rebounding star for coach Paul Brenegan's
squad, grabbing eight boards, seven offensive. Cory Wilks, Eric
Samuelson and Lamar
Townsend pitched in with 11 points apiece as NPU took a 44-36 halftime
lead and held off a late Robert Morris rally. The Vikings helped their
cause by only committing seven turnovers while forcing 19,
Robert Morris, which is located in Springfield, Illinois, fell to 8-10
overall despite Travaras Reed's 22 points.
On Thursday evening, the University of Redlands (9-2) won the tournament
championship, setting a Division III record for points in a 172-107 win
over La Sierra
College (4-12). La Sierra had beaten NPU 72-68 on Wednesday despite 20
points by Townsend, an All-Tourney pick.
The NPU women's basketball team also played in California this week,
beating host Whittier College 55-47 Tuesday in the finals of the Purple
and Gold Classic.
Shandrel Young and Megan Slattery had 20 points apiece for the Vikings,
who raised their record to 8-3 with their third straight win. Young had
scored 10 points as coach Jack Surridge's team beat Gordon College of
Massachusetts 57-50 in overtime on Monday to reach the finals.
At 2 p.m. Saturday, the NPU women play a CCIW game at Carthage College
in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Vikings host Augustana at 7:30 p.m. next
Tuesday as they continue conference play.
Vikings Top Robert Morris College in Finals
REDLANDS, CA (January 7) - The North Park University (NPU) men's
basketball team had five players score in double figures in beating
Robert Morris College 80-78 in the consolation finals of the University
of Redlands Holiday Tournament Thursday afternoon.
