NPU Golf Team Finishes Season on High Note

NAPERVILLE, IL (October 18, 2004) - Senior Joel Youngberg of Prairie Hills Covenant Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, shot a 77 for 18 holes to win individual honors as North Park University (NPU) men's golf team finished a successful fall with a first-place finish at a Quadrangular meet hosted by North Central College.

Coach Paul Brenegan's team had a team total of 317 to beat Wheaton College (328), Elmhurst College (341) and the host school (342) in the October 12 meet. Benedictine University also had players in the meet, although it did not have a team score.

North Park senior Matt Lindahl and Benedictine's Jordan Dunsmore tied for second individually with a score of 78 at the par-71 Naperville Country Club. Freshman Tom Wilson carded a 79 to finish tied for fourth while Jeff Wilson and Peter Johnson rounded out the Vikings roster with identical scores of 82.

Although North Park might not yet be a household name in small college golf in the Midwest, Lindahl and Youngberg have had much success in past College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) tournaments. In fact, Lindahl (who is from Grace Covenant Church in Iron River, Michigan) has placed second during the past two conference meets and was seventh as a freshman.

Youngberg and Lindahl have continued to shine this fall as the Vikings won a team title at an invitational hosted by North Central and in a competition at Hartford, Wisconsin, on September 19-20. NPU tied for first with Milwaukee School of Engineering. But their teammates played especially well in Wisconsin as Johnson was sixth individually with a 6-over-par score of 150 for two founds and Tom Wilson was eighth with a score of 155 behind Concordia University's Blake Seider, who shot a 143.

In other NPU sports action last week:

  • Katie Rose of Mat-Su Covenant Church in Wasilla, Alaska, scored her seventh goal of the season during NPU's 3-0 nonleague women's soccer win over Rockford College last Friday and moved into second place on the school's all-time career goals list with 21. She also assisted on a goal. Melanie Morgan and Erin Neises tallied the other goals for the Vikings, which lost 5-2 in CCIW play at Carthage on Wednesday. Rose and Abbie Frank scored goals in that match.
  • Matt Moncada scored his 10th goal of the season but the Vikings lost 2-1 in overtime to Carthage College last Thursday in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Vikings (now 3-2 in CCIW play) entered the match ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III Central Region. Carthage opened the scoring on a B.J. Seward goal just 1:58 into the match. Mike Brown scored the game-winning goal for his team 4:39 into overtime.
  • In football action Saturday at Holmgren Athletic Complex, NPU lost a CCIW home game 28-6 to Millikin University but Tim and Mike Rotenberry had outstanding defensive games for coach Robin Cooper's squad. Tim Rotenberry had 15 solo tackles and assisted on six others, intercepted a pass and had a 35 yard punt return. Mike Rotenberry had six solo tackles, four assists and sack and a fumble recovery. Jon Harris caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Mike Haehn for NPU's lone points. The Vikings play a 1 p.m. CCIW home game against Carthage College as part of Homecoming festivities at the school this weekend.
  • In volleyball, North Park finished 1-3 at last weekend's Elmhurst College Invitational, beating Olivet College of Michigan in four games for its lone match victory on Saturday.
