Elmhurst Edges North Park Football Vikings

ELMHURST, IL (October 11, 2004) - Mike Haehn threw for 441 yards and four touchdowns on 32 of 54 passing, but it wasn't enough to prevent the North Park University (NPU) football team from a 35-31 loss at Elmhurst College Saturday afternoon.

Haehn's 32 completions were one short of a school record set by John Love in a 1990 game against North Central College. His passing yardage in a game was also second all-time – Love threw for 533 yards versus Elmhurst in 1990. Elmhurst College's offense was also impressive as Bluejays quarterback Dom Demma threw for 419 yards and three scores during the Homecoming contest at Langhorst Field. The two teams combined for 966 yards in total offense.

Jon Harris caught 12 passes from Haehn for 187 yards and a touchdown, Chris Wada had 11 catches for 91 yards and Sherman Gant had 112 yards on three receptions, including scoring catches of 68 and 38 yards. Haehn's other scoring pass, good for eight yards, went to Ahmod Williams. Christian Thomsen had four extra points and booted a 30-yard field goal for the other Vikings points.

Elmhurst's Eric Luna had 102 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns to lead all rushers. His 2-yard run with 2:01 left provided the game-winning points as the Bluejays erased a 31-21 NPU lead in the final 6:38. Todd Evans grabbed his second touchdown pass from Demma, this one from four yards out, to narrow North Park's lead to 31-28 at the 5:17 mark after Gant's second scoring catch put the Vikings ahead by 10 points.

NPU is 1-4 overall, 0-2 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play. It hosts Millikin University in a 1 p.m. CCIW home game on Saturday before hosting Carthage College in a 1 p.m. Homecoming conference matchup on October 23 at Holmgren Athletic Complex.

In other North Park sports action last weekend:

  • NPU's varsity four-person boat won the gold medal in their rowing event at the Quad Cities Classic Regatta last Saturday in Moline. The boat, consisting of team members Jenna Stromquist, Cori Bowman, Karen Ebner, Alli Koubsky and coxswain Erikka Treatch, defeated seven other crews. Meanwhile, the novice, 8-person boat - including team members Carolyn Reep, Jenna Stromquist, Kathryn Tournell, Christine Buettgen, Kelly Burke, Kari Anderson, Lindsey Rhodes, Erica Print and coxswain Linnea Nelson – finished second out of 10 teams. The 8-person novice team also fared well on Sunday in the Head of the Rock Regatta in Rockford, placing fourth of 30 crews (behind three Division I programs).
  • Setter Jennifer Williams distributed 33 assists and Shannon Zoll produced 13 kills as NPU's volleyball team beat Calumet College-St. Joseph 30-28, 30-28, 30-24 in a triangular meet played Saturday at North Park's gymnasium. The Vikings, now 5-18 overall, lost to the University of Chicago in three games (30-28, 30-14, 30-25) earlier in the day. Coach Susan Zimmer's team plays a 7:30 p.m. nonleague match Wednesday against visiting Judson College on Senior Night. The team will honor Williams and fellow senior Amanda Klufetos that evening.
  • Jamie Rose of Mat-Su Covenant Church in Wasilla, Alaska, scored 10 minutes into Saturday's nonleague men's soccer match against visiting University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, helping the NPU beat the Warhawks 3-1. Rose, who was named CCIW Player of the Week the previous week, now has two goals this season. Matt Moncada also scored for coach John Born's team and the Vikings tallied another goal when a UW-Whitewater accidentally kicked a ball into his own goal. NPU, now 10-2-1 overall, plays a 7 p.m. CCCIW match in Kenosha, Wisconsin, against Carthage College.
  • In women's soccer Saturday, North Park lost a 3-1 decision to UW-Whitewater despite a goal by Katie Rose (Jamie's older sister). The Vikings play a 7 p.m. CCIW match Wednesday at Carthage.
