Women's Crew Team Wins the Gold
DE PERE, WI (October 6, 2004) - The North Park University (NPU) women's novice four-person crew team won a gold medal at the Tail of the Fox Regatta Saturday in a wind-shortened event hosted by St. Norbert College.The Viking women - comprised of crew members Jenna Stromquist, Carolyn Reep, Erica Print, Kathryn Tournell and coxswain Rose Lee - defeated eight other crews including boats from the host school, Division I entry Marquette University and other small college entries and rowing clubs.
Next weekend, the women's rowing team wraps up its fall racing season, competing at the Quad Cities Classic in East Moline on Saturday and the Head of the Rock Regatta in Rockford on Sunday.
In other NPU sports action last weekend:
- The men's soccer team moved to 9-1-1 overall with a 3-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) win over visiting Augustana College Saturday afternoon. Jamie Rose, Matt Moncada and Gabe Vogler scored the NPU goals. The team is 3-0 in CCIW play, tied with Wheaton College for first place. The two teams play at Holmgren Athletic Complex in a 7:30 p.m. match on Wednesday.
- The women's soccer team fell 3-0 to Augustana on Saturday.
- The women's volleyball team lost 30-19, 30-21, 30-18 in a conference match at Augustana on Friday despite 23 digs by Amanda Klufetos. The Vikings (now 4-16 overall) were 0-2 at the Augustana Classic on Saturday as Shannon Zoll had 13 and 10 kills in losses to Buena Vista University and Grand View College of Iowa.
- NPU's football team lost 42-10 to Augustana on Saturday in its CCIW opener to fall to 1-3 overall. Ahmod Williams scored on a 34 yard pass from Mike Haehn and Christian Thomsen kicked an extra point after the touchdown and had a 32-yard field goal for the home team's points.
- In cross country action Saturday, Grace Conrad was 52nd of 381 runners and teammate Allison Weller was 54th as NPU placed 19th of 34 teams in its division at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational at Chicago's Montrose Beach.
