Covenant Point Triathlon Raises $7,500

IRON RIVER, MI (August 13, 2004) - Rima Carlson of Ishpeming was the individual winner of the Covenant Point Triathlon fund-raising event held last Sunday, finishing in a time of 2 hours, 19 minutes and 33 seconds.

Carlson was the first woman to ever win the race, which combines a half mile of swimming with 25 miles of biking and 6.5 miles of running. She was one of 11 individuals and six teams of two or three persons competing. The sixth annual competition raised well over $7,500 with more money still coming in, said camp administrator Bill Fish.

Covenant pastor Marc Eix, who resides in Manistee, Michigan, completed the race in 2:20.29 to place second individually. Peter Boberg, a 16-year-old from Algonquin, Illinois, finished in 2:52.53 to become the youngest person ever to complete the triathlon.

The top team included Mary Rapp (swimming) and biker/runner Brian Carlson (Rima's husband), who completed the race in 2:12.47. John Hjelm (swimming), John Fredrickson (biking) and Don Hodgkinson (running) placed second in 2:19.35.

The Covenant Point Triathlon raises funds for the benefit of special needs students and caregivers that come to use the facility, which is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Competitors are encouraged to set a goal of raising at least $500 for the camp, said Fish, who finished his race in a career-best 2:38.00.
