Wisconsin Church to Celebrate Groundbreaking

POPLAR, WI (June 11, 2004) - Mission Covenant Church will celebrate a groundbreaking for an addition to its existing facility with two events next week, including a June 17 worship service and a dedication ceremony on Sunday, June 20.

The theme for the weekend events is "Expanding The Vision," said pastor Darrell Nelson, who has been with the congregation since July 1988. The multiple-use building will include a gymnasium, classrooms, restrooms and a kitchen, among other things. The estimated cost is $1.2 million and it is hoped that the project will be completed in two years.

In 2003, the congregation completed its "Expanding the Vision" campaign to fund the final stage of a building project that began almost a decade earlier. Stages one and two have already been paid for, said Sue Peterson, the church's administrative assistant.

Established in 1894 by early Swedish immigrants, Mission Covenant Church averages 500 in worship services in a town with a population of around 500 in northwest Wisconsin (the county has 29,000 inhabitants). The church moved to its current location in February 1996, located on the south shore of Lake Superior, 25 miles east of Duluth, Minnesota.

The church has used at least one unusual outreach ministry in an effort to connect with its community. To read about this effort, see Hunting Expo Connects with Community.
