Dr. Paul Carlson Documentary to Premiere June 20MINNEAPOLIS, MN (June 7, 2004) - The premiere showing of a new documentary on the life of Dr. Paul Carlson will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 20, officially introducing the 119th Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant Church that will conclude the afternoon of June 23. Carlson, a Covenant medical missionary in Congo, was killed by rebel forces in November 1964. The 45-minute documentary Monganga features an introduction by Dr. G. Timothy Johnson, well-known Covenanter and medical editor of the ABC Television Network. The documentary is intended to create a sense of history and context for the opening worship service that follows the premiere at 7 p.m. at First Covenant Church in Minneapolis. (For a brief overview of this historic church located at 810 Seventh Street South, please see First Covenant Church.) "The story weaves together the Cold War suspicions between the White House and the Kremlin, along with the deadly insurgence of the rebel forces, and the price paid by Dr. Carlson and his family, other missionaries, his fellow captives and the Congolese people," states an overview of the new documentary contained in the annual meeting brochure recently mailed to churches. "The dramatic conclusion is a sober reminder of the cost of discipleship. It is ultimately a story of hope for anyone who ventures to be faithful to the call of Christ." A special advance sneak preview running 7 to 8 minutes in length has been shown at numerous Covenant gatherings in recent weeks. For a look at that preview, please see Monganga Feature Preview While worship services will be conducted at First Covenant, the business sessions and related activities will take place at the Hyatt Regency hotel, 1300 Nicollet Mall, which is located one mile (14 blocks) from the church. Shuttle bus service will be available between the two locations tentative plans call for buses to operate approximately 45 minutes prior to the start of worship services and for another 45 minutes to an hour following the conclusion of the services.
