Degrees Awarded During NPTS Commencement
CHICAGO, IL (May 24, 2004) - Thirty-five students received degrees during the
North Park Theological Seminary (NPTS) commencement ceremony last
Saturday in Anderson Chapel.
Nineteen students earned Master of Divinity degrees, one student earned
an M.Div/MBA degree, two graduated with Master of Arts and Theological
Studies degrees, two earned Master of Arts in Christian Education
degrees, and 10 received Master of Arts in Christian Ministry degrees.
One other student received a certificate in Faith and Health.
Rev. Dr. F. Burton Nelson was posthumously awarded an honorary degree
for his 35 years of service as professor of ethics and theology at NPTS
(1960-96) and for the numerous other ways in which he served both the
seminary and the larger church prior to his death in April. Nelson
retired from the seminary in 1996, but continued to teach at the school
and serve as a research professor of Christian ethics until his death.
He was a longtime Covenant pastor before serving on the NPTS faculty and
is known throughout the academic world for his research on Dietrich
Bonhoeffer, the German Lutheran pastor and Christian martyr who fought
for the resistance during the reign of Adolph Hitler in World War II.
Rev. Michael Louis Pfleger, pastor of Faith Community of St. Sabina
Church on Chicago's south side, gave the commencement address. The
Catholic priest also received an honorary degree on Saturday for his
tireless efforts to better the African American communities in which he
has ministered since 1968.
Amy Rohler of Harris Covenant Church in Harris, Minnesota, received the
Ahnfeldt Medallion for achieving the highest grade point average in the
school.
