Two Covenanters Honored for Teaching Excellence
CHICAGO, IL (May 20, 2004) - Two Covenanters were recently honored by the universities for which they teach. Dale Reed of Grace Covenant Church in Chicago and Dr. Kristine Strand of Cape Cod Covenant Church in Brewster, Massachusetts, were recognized for their teaching excellence.Reed was awarded a Silver Circle Award for teaching excellence at the University of Illinois (UIC) in Chicago as graduating college seniors selected 12 outstanding teachers among a faculty of 2,000. The UIC News Bulletin reported that enthusiasm and energy are among the qualities of this year's winners of the Silver Circle award. Reed's sense of humor in educating students was also mentioned.
A lecturer in the Computer Science Department and the son of Covenant missionaries Jerry and Nancy Reed, Dale was one of 12 recipients of the Silver Circle Award. A graduate of North Park University (majoring in computer science and English) and Northwestern University (Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence), he and his wife, Desiree, and their children have been at Grace for more than two decades and have been involved in leading worship and many other aspects of ministry. Reed has been at UIC since 1996 after having taught at nearby Loyola University and Northwestern.
Strand received an "Excellence in Teaching" award from the Sargeant College of Rehabilitation Sciences at Boston University. Strand will be the moderator at this year's 119th Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Minneapolis – she served in that capacity at last year's annual meeting. Her late father, C. Leslie Strand, was a former Covenant pastor and superintendent of the East Coast Conference and he and his wife, Eleanor, were charter members of Cape Cod Covenant Church in 1981.
Along with her work as an adjunct instructor, Strand is currently in private practice in Boston and holds a position as a consulting speech-language pathologist in the Department of Neurology at Children's Hospital in Boston. She has also co-authored articles and a book chapter, "Developmental Verbal Dyspraxia" (with Shelley Velleman) in Child Phonology: Characteristics, Assessment and Intervention with Special Populations. Prior to entering private practice, Strand was director of the Department of Hearing, Communication, and Reading at Franciscan Children's Hospital.
