New Partnership to Assist Christian Media in Russia
MAGADAN, RUSSIA (May 10, 2004) - New Life Radio (NLR) general manager Daniel
Johnson is part of a new partnership that will help coordinate the
efforts of eight Christian media organizations in Russia, according to
Christian Radio for Russia board member Robert Larson.
The partnership, which includes television, radio, Internet and
Christian publishing entities, will strengthen and complement
consolidation efforts as Christian media begin to gain footing in
Russia. Johnson estimates that 250,000 homes in Russia have satellite
receivers tuned to Eutelsat W4, which carries NLR.
New Life Radio is applying for radio frequencies in two cities - Perm
and Vologda - that combine for a population of approximately 1.5
million, according to a recent NLR newsletter. It awaits the results of
licensing in two other cities, Smolensk and Mykop.
Under the auspices of Christian Radio for Russia (CRFR), NLR has
established a presence in local Russian prisons and has been heard in
Kirgizia and other remote areas of Russia. It started in 1996 in Magadan
as Russia's first Christian FM radio station. It has been working with
KICY Radio in Alaska to help Russians receive KICY Russian programming.
The Alaska station recently sent 1,000 AM solar-powered radios for
distribution in the Russian Far East, while NLR has made inroads with
nearby Ukraine, which was part of the former Soviet Union.
