Wendell Helps U of M to Hockey Championship
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (March 17, 2004) - Krissy Wendell had a goal and two assists as the top-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team defeated No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth 4-2 Sunday afternoon to win the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Final Five Championship at Ridder Arena.Wendell, whose family attends Redeemer Covenant Church in the Twin Cities suburb of Brooklyn Park, was named Most Valuable Player and was on the All-Tournament team, along with teammates Kelly Stephens (two goals on Sunday), Natalie Darwitz and Jody Horak. The win marks the second time in Golden Gopher Women's Hockey history that Minnesota has won both the regular season and Final Five WCHA titles.
After Duluth scored the first goal of the game midway through the first period, Wendell tied the game later in the period. The Golden Gophers tallied three more times before Duluth produced its final goal to end the scoring.
Wendell led the team with two goals and four assists in the WCHA Final Five event. She leads Minnesota in scoring with 70 points, including 32 goals and 38 assists. Wendell played on the U.S. Women's Olympic hockey team that won a silver medal in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.
With Sunday's victory, the Golden Gophers (28-4-2 overall) are one of four teams to be invited to the 2004 NCAA Frozen Four tournament. The NCAA Committee will announce the field on Sunday. More about Wendell can be found on www.covchurch.org by typing "Wendell" in the Search box.
