A Look at What Covenant Students Are Doing This Winter
CHICAGO, IL (January 10, 2004) - From serving Christmas dinners, to "rockin' the night away," students at numerous Covenant churches throughout the world have been making an impact in their communities.Here is a short list of how some of our youth and young adults have been spending their time in recent weeks.
CENTRAL
- Crest Hill, Illinois: Mari Baly was the 2003 Lucia Queen at the Good Shepherd Evangelical Covenant Church Lucia pageant. A junior at Wilmington High School, she runs for the school track and field team and has also had poetry published on Poetry.com.
- Elgin, Illinois: Students at the Evangelical Covenant Church held a Christmas dinner on December 21 and served over 175 people, including parishioners, visitors and families of those receiving gifts as part of a ministry called Angel Tree. Congregational members helped by donating turkeys and giving funds to make the event a success.
MIDWEST
- Lincoln, Nebraska: First Evangelical Covenant Church student Rachel Anderson is serving on the executive planning committee for the city's Martin Luther King Day Rally, a citywide youth event on January 19. The honor roll student also plays on her East High School girls basketball team this winter and plays softball and soccer during the school year, along with singing in the school choir and participating in church activities.
NORTHWEST
- Minneapolis, Minnesota: Ian Taylor of Bethlehem Covenant Church, a junior at Minnehaha Academy, is a principal cellist for the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphony and plays in the school orchestra. He also plays basketball at the school and will captain the football team in the fall. This month, Ian and his parents appeared at the "Live at the Landmark" series at the Schubert Club in downtown Minneapolis during a January 15 noon performance.
PACIFIC SOUTHWEST
- Santa Barbara, California: Montecito Covenant Church's Hanna Willis and Lauren Enright, juniors at Santa Barbara High School, recently participated in the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. The conference serves as a training ground for students to learn leadership skills from some of the most influential people in the United States. About 400 high school juniors and seniors attended and participated in a Model Congress session, mock trials and tours to various sites, among other things. They also had an opportunity to meet with state senators and local representatives.
SOUTHEAST
- Silverhill, Alabama: The Evangelical Covenant Church of Silverhill
hosted a 12-hour ROCK-A-THON and raised nearly $1,500 for World Relief,
said part-time youth pastor Tina Grider. A total of 15 junior high and
high school students participated and received kudos from Jim Sundholm,
executive director of Covenant World Relief.
- Greensboro, North Carolina: Trinity Church began an Upward Ministry basketball program and has attracted 100 children for basketball and another 20 for cheerleading. Teams practice Monday and Thursday at the church's Life Center and games are played on Saturdays for those in grades K-6.
ELSEWHERE
- Taichung, Taiwan: Matthew Dwight, son of Covenant missionaries Don and Lillian Dwight, is a tenth grade student at Morrison Academy, where his dad is a teacher and athletic director. He enjoys playing the French horn, played soccer for his school team and now services as student manager for the junior varsity basketball team. Brother Andy is in eighth grade and enjoys soccer along with playing cello and bass guitar. Sisters Megan and Olivia are in sixth grade. Megan sang for an English CD for the Taichung County schools while Olivia is an avid piano player.
