NPU Vikings Now 2-0 in Men's Basketball
CHICAGO, IL (November 26, 2003) - North Park University's men's basketball team moved to 2-0 this season as freshman Brent Roberts scored 18 points off the bench in the Vikings' 81-67 non-league win over Concordia University on Tuesday night.Roberts hit a jump shot, a 3-point basket and a lay-up off a behind-the-back dribble through traffic that excited the North Park crowd and helped the Vikings pull away midway through the second half. Roberts and Lamar Townsend (13 points) were the primary reasons why North Park's reserve players outscored its starting lineup 52-29.
Brett Mathisen (nine points) and Dewon Byrd (eight points) also made key contributions offensively off the bench. Meanwhile, starting forward Javier Sanchez had a solid all-around game with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Matt Nietfeldt scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Concordia in both categories.
The North Park men's team travels to Waukesha, Wisconsin, for a 7:30 p.m. Saturday non-league contest at Carroll College.
Hours earlier, the Vikings' women's team lost a 62-60 non-league decision to Benedictine University despite 20 points by Shandrel Young and 16 points by Megan Slattery. North Park led 31-25 at the half as Young scored 15 points. But the visiting Eagles made a late rally as Sarah McNicholas scored six of her 15 points in the final 1:38 to help Benedictine pull ahead. A last-second half-court shot by Tiffany Campbell, which would have won the game for North Park, rimmed in and out as the Vikings dropped their first game after opening the season with two victories.
Coach Jack Surridge's team plays a 6 p.m. game against Wisconsin Lutheran College on Friday at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh tourney. The finals of the tourney are slated for Saturday.
