NPU Women's Basketball Team Wins Tournament
COLUMBIA, MO (November 24, 2003) - North Park University (NPU) women's
basketball team won its first tournament in coach Jack Surridge's seven
years as head coach at the school, beating Stephens College 79-33
Saturday in the finals of the Days Inn Tip Off.
Latoya Taris-James scored 14 points, including four 3-point baskets, as
North Park raced to a 37-12 half-time and coasted from there. Megan
Slattery added 12 points, Redina Hall had 11 points and Sara Teachout
had 10 points to lead a balanced scoring attack. Janee' Jones led
Stephens College with eight points.
North Park's 65-57 win over MacMurray College on Friday was highlighted
by four 3-point baskets by Tiffany Campbell, the team's high scorer with
17 points. Laura Mount had 12 points and five assists while Slattery
contributed nine points and 12 rebounds and Emily Brown had nine points
and six rebounds in a reserve role.
On Tuesday, Surridge's squad hosts Benedictine University in a non
league matchup as part of a doubleheader basketball evening. The women's
team's 6 p.m. game precedes the 8 p.m. North Park men's team game
against Concordia University of River Forest.
The men's team opened the 2003-04 season last Friday with a 56-53 home
win over Edgewood College as Cal Ecker contributed 16 points and 10
rebounds. Javier Sanchez added 14 points and five rebounds for the
Vikings, which held the visitors to 30 percent field goal shooting.
