First Regular Worship Service at Sanctuary Covenant (MN)

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (October 10, 2003) - The Sanctuary Covenant Church, a new multiethnic church plant under pastor Efrem Smith, conducted it first regular worship service for more than 400 people on Sunday, October 5, in the Patrick Henry High School auditorium.

After beginning preview services in April with an average of 300 in attendance, the church had 340 attend a May 18 worship service, both held in North Minneapolis. Its first weekly preview service, which took place August 24, attracted 358 individuals, according to Bernadine Jefferson, church administrator.

The Sanctuary Covenant Church is a collaborative effort of the Northwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) and the denomination's Department of Church Growth and Evangelism. Mark Stromberg, director of church development for the Northwest Conference, and Don Davenport, the department's associate director of church planting, have provided administrative assistance to the congregation. Several Twin Cities Covenant congregations, along with several non-Covenant churches, have also assisted the church planting effort, said Stromberg.
