Funeral Service Conducted for Helen Casey

MILWAUKEE, WI (October 3, 2003) - A funeral service was conducted Friday at the Evangelical Covenant Church of Milwaukee for ordained Covenant minister Helen (Hunsinger) Casey, who died last Saturday (September 27) at the age of 73. Pastor Tim LaHann officiated.

Born March 23, 1930, in Chicago, Casey went to North Park Junior College in Chicago and finished her undergraduate education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, earning a teaching degree with a specialization in science. She then earned a Masters degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and took courses in botany at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Casey became a teacher in West Bend, Wisconsin, and taught at other schools in Milwaukee, serving as a teaching assistant at UW-Milwaukee and other adult education classes, but she always had ministry on her mind. She earned a Master of Divinity from North Park Theological Seminary, became a chaplain at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Milwaukee and was ordained by the Evangelical Covenant Church in 1985. Later she served at DePaul Rehabilitation Center in Milwaukee and eventually became the head of pastoral care there. After the hospital closed, she continued to meet with the chapel group she formed at DePaul, Serenity Chapel, at the homes of the members.

An active member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Milwaukee, Casey and her husband, Donald, had been living in Wauwatosa, a suburb of Milwaukee. She was very active on the board at Mayfair Interfaith and volunteered at many other places, said a family member during Friday's service. Her hobbies included bicycling, scuba diving, singing and playing the guitar and piano.

Casey is survived by her husband of 45 years, daughters Linda (Dale) Myszewski and Kathleen (Robert) Dionne, sister Phyllis Blackard and grandchildren Dale II, Andy, Patrick and Joshua Myszewski and Matthew and David Dionne. Helen's parents and a grandson, Daniel, preceded her in death.
