Montecito Covenant Celebrates Groundbreaking
SANTA BARBARA, CA (September 10, 2003) - Montecito Covenant Church celebrated
the groundbreaking of a proposed $4.25 million worship center and office
building project on Sunday as more than 250 attended an afternoon ceremony.
Key members of the building campaign were introduced by church chair
Lori Call during the event. They included members of the building
committee, the building campaign committee, architect Ray Ketze, and
construction contractors Russ and Dan Michaelsen. Associate pastor Diana
Trautwein read a litany prepared for the occasion before representatives
dug into the ground for the symbolic groundbreaking. Attendees and
participants in the groundbreaking were served a BBQ chicken dinner.
Dr. Kurt Fredrickson, Covenant pastor and new director of the Doctorate
of Ministry Program at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena,
California, preached at the morning worship. The event marks the latest
change for a congregation in the midst of transition. The church's
pastor of 23 years Curtis Peterson recently left to become the new
executive minister of the Evangelical Covenant Church's Department of
World Mission.
A three-phase plan for the building project was drawn up and eventually
approved by the Santa Barbara Planning Commission in 1991. Phase one
included a facility called the Peterson Family Life Center. Phase two
involved construction of a building dedicated to student ministries
called The Outback. The congregation of 751 (according to last year's
worship statistics in the Covenant Yearbook) will worship in the
Peterson Family Life Center while phase three is being completed.
Thus far, more than $3.4 million of the $4.25 needed for the building
project has been raised or pledged and more than half of the total has
already been deposited in the bank, said Trautwein. Along with adding a
worship center and offices, phase three includes parking lot renovation,
extensive landscaping of the church grounds and a series of improvements
for the parsonage and children's ministries space on the campus.
