North Park: A University for Social Justice

CHICAGO, IL (June 18, 2003) - North Park University (NPU) is featured in the May-June 2003 edition of Sojourners magazine for helping raise awareness in students the issues of peace and justice, particularly in the Middle East. NPU was one of five schools profiled in sidebars to an article entitled " The University of Social Justice."

NPU recently hosted the production of "The Longing," a play written by Robert Hostetter, professor of Communication Arts and Theater at NPU. Based on interviews with Palestinians, the play tells profound stories of displacement and the desire for a just peace in that region. It has been performed a total of 20 times in Chicago, Atlanta and other sites.

Sojourners ministries grew out of the Sojourners Community, an inner-city neighborhood in Washington, D.C. Sojourners traces its roots back to Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, in the early 1970s, when a handful of students began meeting to discuss the relationship between their faith and political issues, particularly the Vietnam War. Its co-founder is noted activist Jim Wallis.
