CHIC to Continue as Single-Site Event
CHICAGO, IL (June 5, 2003) - Marti Burger, director of Youth and Family Ministries for the Department of Christian Formation of the Evangelical Covenant Church, announced that the denomination's triennial high school conference, CHIC, will continue as one conference and be housed at the University of Tennessee in upcoming years.Burger made the announcement during a chapel service for denominational employees on Wednesday. The CHIC (Covenant High in Christ) council had considered hosting two separate CHIC events in 2006, citing the inability to find a venue large enough to house more than the 6,500 attending the 2000 event, CHIC2K. The CHIC council was hoping to host an East Coast and West Coast CHIC event during 2006 and announced its intention shortly after CHIC2K.
However, the University of Tennessee recently stated that it can increase its housing capacity for as many as 12,000 by using off-campus housing in Knoxville, said Burger. Kirsten Bell, who is coordinating CHIC through the Department of Christian Formation, estimates that this year's event will have between 5,800 and 6,200 in attendance.
CHIC2K3 will be held from July 31 through August 6 at the University of Tennessee. Call Bell at 773-583-0220 for information about the event.
In other news, council member Dale Lusk stated that CHIC2K3 is seeking youth talent for "A Place Called Heaven," a nightly opportunity for individuals and groups to share their talents on stage (see related story elsewhere in the news report). A venue will be set up in the Presidential Courtyard of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville as a place where youth at CHIC can display their talents and learn about cultural differences in creative expression. For more information about "A Place Called Heaven," call Lusk at 956-668-1723.
