Lyndhurst (OH) Celebrates 50 Years of Ministry
LYNDHURST, OH (May 20, 2003) - Bethany Covenant Church celebrated 50 years of ministry on Sunday as pastor Stacey Littlefield preached on the topic "What's In A Name" for the more than 200 people in attendance.Littlefield challenged the congregation to continue the work of reaching the lost in the Cleveland area. Larry Sherman, associate superintendent of the Great Lakes Conference, brought greetings from the conference and prayed for the congregation. Fridolf Pearson, who is among the oldest members of the church at 101 years of age, also attended worship service along with several charter members and their families. The worship service included special music from a brass ensemble and adult and children's choirs. A catered dinner and program followed.
A commemorative booklet was prepared for the occasion and during the afternoon program many had the opportunity to share memories of the church's impact on their lives.
Gail Means, chair of the celebration committee, said Bethany Covenant will participate in community and church events as it continues to celebrate its golden anniversary. The church also hopes to host a picnic to celebrate its preschool's 35th anniversary later this year.
"It was great to fellowship with those who helped us be in the position we are today," said Means about the many guests who attended from out of town. "We had people attend from California and Florida and also had some who, for whatever reason, haven't been attending regularly. It was absolutely a glorious day and the people who put so much effort in putting this together were walking on air. The Lord was gracious."
Located in a suburb of Cleveland, Bethany Covenant averages 150 in worship attendance. The church was founded on May 19, 1953. During the early years under pastor Leroy Carlson, the congregation met for worship services in a local pavilion, where a burgeoning Sunday school program was instrumental in helping the church to grow.
