Covenanter Among Top Hitters with Pittsburgh Pirates Affiliate
LYNCHBURG, VA (May 17, 2003) - Nathan McLouth, who grew up in Whitehall, Michigan, and attended the Evangelical Covenant church there, is among the hitting leaders for the Carolina League as an outfielder with the Lynchburg Hillcats, a Class A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.McLouth is hitting .308 and is third in the league with 33 runs scored and fourth with an on-base percentage of .429. He has stolen 17 bases in 18 tries, also fourth in the league. His team was 22-15 as of May 15, second in the Northern Division.
After earning All-State honors as a high school baseball player in Michigan, McLouth was picked by the Pirates in the 25th round of the 2000 amateur draft. He played with Lynchburg a year ago, hitting .244 with 20 stolen bases as the Hillcats won the Carolina League championship.
