Service Held for Warren M. Jones
SAVONBURG, KS (May 13, 2003) - A memorial service was held at the Evangelical Covenant Church of Savonburg on May 5 for retired ordained Covenant minister Warren M. Jones of Chanute, Kansas, who died May 1.The 84-year-old Jones was born May 7, 1918, in Sioux City, Iowa, and was baptized at the Covenant church there. Following two years at North Park Junior College, he finished his undergraduate degree at Emporia State University in Kansas before returning to Chicago to earn his theology diploma at North Park Theological Seminary. By then, he had already spent three years in ministry at Stotler Covenant Church in Osage City, Kansas.
Ordained by the Covenant in 1946, Jones served as pastor at two rural churches in Michigan from 1945-47. He then began a teaching career that spanned more than three decades, earning masters degrees from both the University of Michigan (secondary school administration) and Emporia State (physical science). While teaching, Jones was pastor at Axtell Covenant Church in Axtell, Kansas, from 1964-66 and served at Vilas Bethel Lutheran Church in Chanute, Kansas, from 1968-87 before retiring.
Jones is survived by his wife, Ann, and children Nancy (Clough) and Norman. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Covenant Ministers' Crisis Fund in care of The Department of the Ordered Ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church, 3311 West Foster Avenue, Chicago, IL, 60625.
