North Park Students Protest Possible War Against Iraq

CHICAGO, IL (March 5, 2003) - Nearly 100 North Park University (NPU) students gathered for an on-campus protest of a possible war in Iraq Wednesday morning while others went downtown during the afternoon to protest with other groups at the federal plaza.

The protest was part of a national Strike For Peace campaign that has gotten grassroots support in recent weeks through Internet publicity. To see photographs of today's on-campus demonstration, visit War Protest

Students listened to lawyer and minister Father Robert Bossie talk about his experiences in Iraq. Bossie serves at the 8th Day Center for Justice in Chicago and has written books and articles calling for peaceful solutions to complex diplomatic problems throughout the world. People milled around booths that provided students information about how to contact government leaders to protest a possible war. Some assembled relief packages to send to needy individuals in Iraq.

The United States and Great Britain have asked for a United Nations (U.N.) resolution authorizing war against Iraq. In a meeting held in Paris Wednesday, the foreign ministers of France, Russia and Germany said they will not support a U.N. resolution that authorizes war against Iraq.

A petition urging tough U.N. inspections rather than war on Iraq is being delivered to the U.N. Security Council on Thursday through an organization called MoveOn.org. The petition can be found online at www.MoveOn.org/emergency/
