Civil Rights Activist to Speak at North Park
CHICAGO, IL (March 1, 2003) - Human and civil rights activist, preacher and interfaith leader Dr. Yvonne Delk will teach a course at North Park University (NPU) that includes evening sessions on March 25 and March 27 that are open to the public.The course, "Traveling the Emmaus Road: Biblical Revelations for the Dismantling of Racism," will have public sessions from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Viking Hall that will cost $5 per participant. The full course, which features additional sessions and site visits throughout the week of March 23-29, can be audited for $100. It is part of North Park's year-long campus discussion addressing the theme, "Who is God?"
Delk has been an advocate for human and civil rights for more than four decades. From 1990 to 1998, she served as executive director of the Community Renewal Society, a faith-based Chicago metropolitan area agency that empowers people to dismantle racism and poverty in order to transform their communities. The first African American woman to be ordained in the United Church of Christ (UCC), Delk has also served as executive director of the UCC's Office of Church and Society. In 1997, she was named one of the top 15 female preachers in the United States by Ebony Magazine.
