Women Prevail, Men Edged Out in Viking Action
NAPERVILLE, IL (February 23, 2003) - Despite 31 points by Irving Richardson, North Park University (NPU) lost 104-100 at North Central College Saturday night to drop to 12-11 overall, 2-10 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play.Richardson scored 18 of his points in the first half as the Vikings took a 49-48 lead. But North Central used a scrambling defense and the inside scoring of Mike Wilson and Monte Williams to take the lead for good late in the contest. Williams' lay-up put the Cardinals ahead 90-88 with 5:31 left in the midst of a 9-0 rally and North Central stole the ball from Aaron Coleman with four seconds left as the Vikings attempted to tie the game.
Williams had 14 of his 21 points in the second half and Wilson finished with a team-high 23 points as the Cardinals moved to 7-16, 3-9 in conference play. Sneed Deaderick added 19 points for NPU, which travels to Elmhurst College for a 7:30 p.m. conference game Wednesday night before ending its season with a 7:30 p.m. home game against Augustana College. North Park will honor the players from the 1978-80 national title teams during halftime of that contest.
In women's basketball action, Megan Slattery scored 27 points on 10 of 11 field goals as NPU beat visiting Elmhurst College 64-46 Saturday afternoon at North Park's gym.
Shandrel Young added 16 points, five assists and four steals for the Vikings, who travel to Wheaton College Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. conference game. Young also broke the conference record for free throws made in a season by making 5 of 7 foul shots.
