Slattery made 7 of 9 field goal attempts, but NPU couldn't find consistent
offense elsewhere in falling to 7-15 overall, 2-10 in College Conference of
Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play. Angela Beyer had 14 points to lead
Carthage (16-8 overall), which moved to the top of the CCIW with a 10-3
mark.
NPU took an early 12-2 lead as Slattery scored eight of her points in the
opening 7:06 of the game. But the visiting Lady Reds scored 12 of the final
15 points of the half to lead 30-24 at the intermission as Beyer hit two
3-point baskets, scored on an inside shot and added two foul shots.
A Slattery lay-up with 16:33 left tied the game at 32-32 and the game
stayed close from there with eight lead changes and four ties during the
next 11 minutes before a Jessica Stevens field goal with 5:21 remaining put
Carthage ahead for good, 49-47.
NPU was within striking distance with 1:46 left, trailing 54-51 after two
Molly Mitchell foul shots. However, Tiffany McCrackin made an inside basket
and Beyer added two foul shots as Carthage held off the Vikings' last
attempts to even the contest.
Senior starters Amy Stoltz, Carrie Swenson and Sara Sietsema will be
honored on Senior Day as NPU hosts Elmhurst College in a 2 p.m. CCIW game
Saturday. Stoltz ranks seventh in career assists at NPU with 152 and is
currently 11th in assists with 226, four behind Dibbit Oudal (230) and six
behind Lenore Johnson (232) in the career rankings.
Swenson is eighth in career rebounds at NPU with 608, trailing Gina
